Abstract

This paper maps and analyzes the offer of Social Sciences degree programs in Central American universities and, at the same time, characterizes and problematizes the development of Social Sciences in the region. Through the mapping of the academic offer, the diversity of academic programs related to the Social Sciences is identified and analyzed, in specific disciplines, defining a study profile. This has made it possible to visualize the training presences and absences, make visible the disciplinary emphases and predominant trends, as well as identify possible gaps or imbalances in the training of professionals in Social Sciences in the region, through a comparative exercise. A characterization of the development of the Social Sciences in Central America is presented, considering its historical evolution, the theoretical and methodological approaches that have been present, and the main areas of research addressed in the past and in the present (identifying the challenges faced by the field). Finally, reflective aspects are raised on the construction or restructuring of the field at the present time.
