Abstract

The present study aimed to determine the prevalence of alcohol and tobacco use among primary school students in three schools in San Salvador. The study design was transversal with a descriptive approach. The sample was 169 students. The results obtained were as follows: the prevalence of alcohol and tobacco consumption was high in the evaluated patterns, where the male gender had higher percentages than the female. The most consumed drink was beer, and the form of smoking was the cigarette. Most students commented that alcohol and tobacco use is a great risk. For the different patterns of smoking, 13 risk factors and 4 of protection were detected; In the case of alcohol consumption, 5 risk factors and 6 of protection were detected. In conclusion, the consumption of alcohol and tobacco in students of Third Cycle (7th to 9th grade) can be influenced by the risk factors found, especially in tobacco consumption.
